Students from Abu Dhabi University, Khalifa University, and ADVETI, will be taking part in the challenge to foster Emirati engineering talent in the steel sector.
Abu Dhabi, UAE – October 10 2019: Emirates Steel, the only integrated steel plant in the UAE and a subsidiary of the General Holding Corporation (SENAAT), is inviting students from major UAE educational institutions to participate the Regional Championship of the 14th steelChallenge, to encourage young Emirati students to consider a career in the steel industry. Taking place on November 27, 2019, Emirates Steel is a silver sponsor of the event, highlighting the company’s commitment to investing in the development of future leaders of the regional steel sector.
Emirates Steel has partnered with Abu Dhabi University, Khalifa University, and ADVETI to allow their students to participate in the challenge. Emirates Steel will be assessing the performance of students taking part in the competition, and will be considering offering employment contracts to students who perform well in the challenge.
The steelChallenge is run annually by steeluniversity, which is itself part of the World Steel Association (worldsteel). During the championship, participants from five regions around the globe compete over a twenty-four hour time period to produce a grade of steel, with an emphasis on high quality and minimal costs. Students participating from the UAE will be competing against teams from the West Asian region. At last year’s competition, Emirates Steel saw five of its employees place in the top eleven positions in the region.
Speaking ahead of the competition, Eng. Saeed Ghumran Al Remeithi, Chief Executive Officer of Emirates Steel, said: “As part of Emirates Steel’s efforts to support the diversification and transformation of the UAE economy into one that is knowledge-based, we strive to educate and inspire future generations to work in the nation’s heavy industry sector. Encouraging and enabling talent at a young age is an important part of our strategy to strengthen our future industrial sector, and that is why we are proud to have partnered with Abu Dhabi University, Khalifa University and ADVETI, to help shape their students’ technical capabilities through the production of steel.”
“We are proud to be silver sponsors of this event, enabling those interested in learning about steel production within the Middle East and the wider region an opportunity to engage with some of the real challenges that engineers face when designing effective steel manufacturing processes. Building wider regional knowledge and expertise helps us increase both the quality of our steel, its capabilities, and its pricing, allowing us to remain competitive on the international global steel market,” he added.
“I wish the best of luck to all participants taking part in the competition: it seems like a fascinating challenge for any young engineer to tackle,” Eng. Al Remeithi concluded.
